Today Allison and I stopped by downtown Rochester to check out the 2011 Fire and Ice festival. She lives in Rochester and tells me that this is a yearly event. The festival runs from Friday to Sunday and basically involves ice sculptures (Ice) and fireworks (Fire), as well as some events for the childrens. We missed the fireworks part, but were in time to see the Toys R Ice! ice sculpture show. I was hoping to see some chainsaw-on-ice action, but alas, no such luck. We only got to see the final products. I think my favorite was the leprechaun outside the Irish pub Gus O'Connors.
It was definitely cold enough for ice sculptures (about 25 F), but also too cold for wandering outside aimlessly. There was a cool iced-out hill for sledding that I totally wanted to ride, but I ended up stepping in a huge puddle of ice water and my feet were turning black.
Maybe next year we can catch the fireworks and stay warm with Guinness inside the pub!
